For this essay, students will write about an early Mexican American Civil Rights activist. Essay 1 asks students to uncover hidden histories of the region and demonstrate understanding of Mexican American History by writing about largely ignored historical figures and their actions in historical context. In order to recognize the widespread absence of women in our formal histories and to honor Women’s History Month, for this essay, students should select one of the following early Mexican American Civil Rights activists: Jovita Idar (CH 6) or Emma Tenayuca (CH 7) and follow the guidelines below to create 2-4 page essay. Midterm Essay guidelines: Explain who this person is in the context of the time period. Use the assigned book in this class to describe the social landscape during the time in which this historical figure was active. In other words, you should not just write about what this historical figure did. You must describe the social world in which she did it in order to show me you can make connections between individual choices and social structure. Formatting: Your essay should be typed, in a simple 12 point font, double-spaced except for any title info (that is, your name, my name, course info, date, etc should not be double-spaced). Use paragraphs to organize your essay. An Introduction paragraph should be present to tell me exactly what your paper is about and it should include a thesis statement that offers an accurate summary of your overall claim. The body of your essay should draw from the book and other reputable sources to support the claim you make in your thesis statement. Your essay should also include a concluding paragraph that restates your claim and closes the essay by remarking on the value of uncovering this hidden history (in other words, what is the value of telling this story?) In-text citations: In-text citations are the indicators in your essay that direct the reader to the exact part of the source you are referring to in your work. You must cite sources in your essay whether or not you use a quote. Directly following each reference to a source, you should include the source author and page number in parenthesis. For example: (Vargas, pg 183). You may include this information in footnotes instead if you want (no parenthesis necessary in footnotes). In-text citations serve as sign-posts that tell me you understand that writing for higher education means citing sources in your paper. Bibliography of sources at the end of your essay. At the end of your essay, create a Bibliography section and provide a full citation for the Vargas book and any other sources you consult for this essay. Use Chicago Manual of Style, the style most readily used in History and the Humanities. This list of complete source citations serves to show me you understand that writing for higher education means including a list of full citations for each source consulted for the essay.
